With the shadow of Google looming over both companies, the New York Post says the software giant wants Yahoo to consider a buyout.
Microsoft has intensified its pursuit of a deal to take over, asking the company to re-enter formal talks, the Post reported on its website Friday. While the two companies have held informal deal talks over the years, the latest approach signals a new urgency on Microsoft's part, the paper said, citing unnamed sources. The approach follows an offer Microsoft made to buy Yahoo a few months ago, the Post reported, but Yahoo spurned the advances. The Post said Wall Street sources put a roughly $50bn price tag on Yahoo. The newspaper said the renewed pursuit of Yahoo stems in part from Google's recently announced plans to buy online ad company DoubleClick, and also fits in a larger, ongoing struggle between Google and Microsoft over internet software. Microsoft and Yahoo could not immediately be reached for comment.
