Nokia has released a security appliance for large businesses, building on work it has been carrying out with Intel and the security company Check Point.

Nokia's IP2450 security platform for firewalls and VPNs is the first product to result from the collaboration between the three companies. The two-rack unit contains two quad-core Intel Xeon 5355 processors and runs on Nokia's IPSO operating system. Nokia claims it offers the lowest price per port and lowest price per gigabit of firewall throughput in its class.

"Our customers want the highest levels of security and performance," said Check Point's vice president of product management, Robert Egner. "Together with Nokia leveraging the Intel and Check Point CoreXL innovations, we envision many more opportunities to solve enterprise security challenges with our joint channel community."

Nokia claims that the IP2450 has been designed for business continuity, scalability and extensibility. The Finnish communications giant also offers high-port density Nokia Accelerated Data Path Cards to increase firewall throughput to approximately 20Gbps. The base price for the IP2450 is $59,995 (£29,578).
