The Castlevania franchise has recently seen quite the resurgence of popularity thanks to a strong line of DS titles and downloadable classics. Following the success of the handheld games, Konami has announced that Castlevania Judgment will be making its way to the Wii, but in an unexpected way: as a fighting game.

Drawing from a pool of characters from the series' 22-year history, including multiple generations of the Belmont family, the game will pit characters against each other in a battle to the death. Positioned as an "entry point into the fighting game genre," Castlevania Judgment will use motion-controlled stabbing, slashing and, most importantly, whipping to make the action more immersive and accessible. Connectivity with the new DS title Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and online multiplayer over the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection have also been confirmed.

The Castlevania franchise has, for the most part, stayed true to its roots, so seeing a side project in the fighting genre is certainly unexpected. However, the combat mechanics of the later games could definitely make for a fun fighting game—especially online. Look out for Castlevania Judgment this fall, exclusively for the Wii.
