The National Police Agency put out a nationwide e-mail virus alert on Monday for a worm disguised as a New Year’s greeting card. It reaches computers in messages that say, “A new year’s greeting card has arrived, please open it and visit the site,” tempting users to click on a link and open an attached file. Once they do, the virus contaminates the computers, disabling firewalls and security software.
“The end of the year usually sees the most malicious codes circulating on the Internet,” police said. “We urge users to be extremely wary of opening attached files in a New Year’s greeting e-mail if they don’t know the sender, and to install the latest security patches.”
