Recently Executive Software® Company issued a new tool from the disk defragmentation service programs series – Disk Performance Analyzer for Networks (DPAN). Its main function is to determine the fragmentation rate of the files located on the LAN hard drives. The program takes up just a little part of your hard disk, but at the same time it provides quite high functionality. Let’s take a look at the main features of the program.

When launched, Performance Analyzer detects the network environment of the computer where it runs and asks you which of the network computers you want to check up for the file fragmentation rate. To do so you need to have administrator’s rights for remote PC’s, because DPAN supplies the remote PC’s with its agent, which runs there and gives you a detailed report providing information about how many network computers need defragmentation and to what extent, then, the average number of fragments per file (including system files as well), and how much the current fragmentation rate affects the performance level of the computers when they access the fragmented files, and the performance loss when reading all the files. The results of the analysis carried out by the program have three levels: "critical", "warning" and "heavy", which markedly reflect the current file fragmentation rate.

The tool requires certain network protocols and services to be present and appropriately set, namely NetBIOS over TCP/IP, Remote Registry Service, and RPC Service. That’s why WinXP SP2 owners and those who use third party firewalls might need to adjust the firewall settings and some default network parameters. The detailed information concerning required network settings is provided in the help section. In case any problems occur when detecting the network environment and in other difficult situations you may find out the possible reasons of the incorrect program’s behavior and ways to resolve such situation in the appropriate program’s section by pressing the “Status Info” button.

On the whole, the program proved to be a quite effective defragmentation analysis tool, which may essentially facilitate the network administrator’s activity by shortening the time he spends checking every single PC individually. The required level of network skills needed for correct network setting won’t become an obstacle for an experienced network administrator. You should also keep in mind that the program can be installed only on network versions of the Windows operating systems.
