Arizona teenagers are getting a hand with learning how to break into the video game industry, thanks to a new program at Arizona State University called "Camp Game." The program is now in its second year, and it lets fifteen students from local high schools spend six weeks under the instruction of Ashish Amresh, a lecturer in the School of Computing and Informatics, and two other industry veterans. During this time, the students work on a number of amateur games and then put their final projects on display on the last day of the program.

Summer programs like Camp Game are the latest tactic by tech-oriented colleges to get teens interested in educations and careers in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Schools like DigiPen and SMU's Guild Hall have also started offering summer workshops which introduce interested students to certain areas of game development, with the eventual goal of getting them to enroll as full-time students.

I'm always a big fan of workshops like these, as they will often provide training for enthusiastic amateurs without any prior experience, thereby helping people who normally wouldn't have a shot get into the game design field. Of course, there's the added benefit of working with such institutions, which can help aspiring developers get some much-needed exposure through events like The PAX 10. This year, the final Camp Game titles will be available for the public to play on July 18.
